The Abortion Pill

Early medication abortion method

What is the abortion pill?

The abortion pill also known as a medical, medication, or non-surgical abortion, is two drugs usually taken in separate doses. Mifepristone is taken orally first and then the second medication, Misoprostol is taken 24-48 hours later.

In general, you have up to 10 weeks after the first day of your last period. If it has been over that then you would have to have another type of abortion in a clinic who performs them.

The abortion pill is 96-98% effective for pregnancies 9 weeks gestation or less. For those pregnancies that are 9-11 weeks in gestation the sucess rate decreases to 87-93%.

  • Anyone who is past 10 weeks of pregnancy
  • Have what is called an ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside of the uterus)
  • Have problems with your adrenal glands
  • Currently being treated with long-term corticosteroid therapy
  • Have had an allergic reaction to mifepristone, misoprostol or similar drugs
  • Have bleeding problems or are taking anticoagulant (blood thinning) drugs
  • Have inherited porphyria (a rare disorder that can affect your liver and other organs)
  • Have an intrauterine device (IUD) in place (it must be removed before taking mifepristone)

An ectopic pregnany is a non-viable pregnancy that develops outside the uterus (womb). It is usually located in one of the fallopian tubes. As the baby grows, the tube cannot hold it, causing the tube to rupture (burst) and bleed. Up to 40% of ectopic pregnancies rupture suddenly, causing pain and bleeding in the abdominal cavity. The other 60% usually cause slow bleeding in the abdomen. Ruptured ectopic pregnancies can be fatal.
